Travel pillows: memory foam, inflatable or nothing
Most travel pillows fail for the same reason: they support the back of the neck while your head falls forward. Shape matters more than filling.
Shapes, ranked by how well they sleep
Wrap-around / scarf style. Supports the chin and stops the forward fall. Best for upright economy seats and the only shape that works if you sleep with your head down.
High-sided memory foam. Good for side sleepers with a window seat, bulky to carry, and it fills a bag quickly.
Inflatable horseshoe. Packs to nothing, supports almost nothing. Fine as a lumbar pad, poor as a pillow.
Flat pillow or rolled jacket. Often beats all of the above and costs nothing.
What to look for
- Chin support, not just neck support
- Machine-washable cover — you will sweat on it
- A stuff sack or clip loop so it attaches to a bag instead of consuming packing space
- Under 300 g if you intend to carry it all trip
Pair it with
An eye mask that seals at the nose, and earplugs rated around 30 dB. Together they do more for in-flight sleep than any single gadget. Do not pack these in your checked bag — keep them with your cabin bag and personal item.
