Sets are sold on the promise of one purchase covering every trip. Sometimes that is true, and sometimes you end up with a 28 inch case that no airline will let you fill, plus a cabin case you could have bought alone for less.

The sizes that make sense together

A useful two-piece set is 20 inch cabin + 24 inch medium: one flies with you, the other handles a fortnight. Three-piece sets usually add a 28 inch case — valuable for families, dead weight for solo travellers on 20–23 kg allowances.

The pieces should nest inside each other for storage. If they do not, you are storing three bags instead of one.

What to check before buying a set

  • Are all pieces the same quality tier? Sets are sometimes assembled from a premium cabin case and a cheaper large one.
  • Do the wheels match? Mixed wheel types across a set handle differently and wear at different rates.
  • Is the shell weight consistent? A heavy large case plus a heavy cabin case can waste 8 kg of allowance between them.
  • Do the dimensions include wheels? Budget carriers measure the whole case, not the body.
  • Warranty terms per piece. "Lifetime" often excludes wheels, handles and zips — exactly what breaks.

When a set is the wrong buy

If you fly budget carriers, if you travel alone, or if you already own a good cabin case, buy a single medium case instead. If you travel as a couple or a family with a shared checked allowance, a two- or three-piece set genuinely pays for itself.

Mixing brands is fine

Nothing requires a matching set. A hard-shell medium plus a soft cabin backpack covers more trip shapes than a three-case set, and packs into less space at home.

Two set shapes worth buying

  • 20 + 24 inch (cabin + medium) — the solo or couple set. Both pieces get used on most trips, and they nest for storage.
  • 24 + 28 inch (medium + large) — the family or long-trip set, usually paired with a cabin bag you already own.

A 20 + 24 + 28 three-piece set only makes sense if you regularly check two bags. On budget carriers, where a 20 kg allowance is normal, the 28 inch piece becomes a storage box at home.

Splitting a set across travellers

Allowances are per passenger, so assign pieces by allowance rather than by person: give the traveller with the larger allowance the larger case, then weigh each piece separately at home. Label every bag with a tag containing a phone number and email, because a set looks identical on a carousel — and identical bags get taken by mistake more often than stolen.
