Travel backpack or suitcase? Choosing by trip type
The right answer depends on the surfaces you will cross, not on which bag looks better in a photograph.
Choose a backpack when
- You will use stairs, metro escalators, or cobbled streets
- You are moving between cities every few days
- You need your hands free for a phone, ticket or child
- Your airline weighs cabin bags strictly — a soft pack squeezes into a sizer
Look for a load-bearing hip belt on anything over 40 litres. Without one, the weight sits on your shoulders and the trip gets long. A front-opening "travel pack" beats a top-loading hiking pack for hotel travel.
Choose a suitcase when
- Airports and hotels dominate the trip
- You are carrying a laptop and smart clothes
- You want to stand the bag up and open it flat in a small room
- Weight limits are generous and the ground is smooth
Four spinner wheels make a case effortless on terminal floors and useless on gravel.
The middle path
A 40 litre carry-on backpack plus a small packable day bag covers most trips, and both fit under a seat on a short-haul flight. If you check luggage anyway, a hard case protects better than fabric.
Check the numbers first
Cabin backpack limits are usually the same as case limits: about 55 x 40 x 20 cm on European short-haul. Measure the pack with its compression straps done up. Compare options in Travel backpacks and Duffel & weekender bags.
