Do packing cubes actually save space?

Packing cubes solve a specific problem: keeping a bag organised when you are moving between hotels, not squeezing more into it. Compression versions do both, at a cost in weight.

What cubes are good for

  • Multi-stop trips — one cube per type of clothing means you unpack a layer, not the whole bag.
  • Shared luggage — each traveller gets a colour and stops rummaging.
  • Odd-shaped bags — duffels and soft backpacks lose their structure; cubes restore it.

Where they fail

Zips and ripstop fabric add weight, and a full set can cost 300–500 g of your cabin allowance. Compression cubes also crease shirts harder than flat folding. If your trip is a single hotel and a carry-on, a laundry bag and two cubes is usually enough.

A workable carry-on setup

  • One medium compression cube for tops, rolled.
  • One small cube for underwear and socks.
  • One flat pouch for cables and chargers, kept at the top.
  • Shoes in a dedicated bag, at the bottom, or wear the heaviest pair.

Start with two cubes rather than a six-piece set. Browse Packing cubes & organisers and check the weight listed in each product's feed data before you buy a full set.
